I don’t consider myself a fearful person, but with four small children, cold and flu season was miserable and exhausting and I found myself living in fear and dread of the next illness my family would inevitably catch. When I learned about essential oils from a dear friend I was skeptical, but I was desperate and I took the plunge and bought my first bottle of essential oil, the protective blend. From that first bottle forward, our lives and our health have changed dramatically and I have joined the masses of people who wonder “what did I do before essential oils?” Before essential oils I was fearful…Now I feel equipped to safely and confidently use natural solutions in my home, and it is empowering!
Essential oils are not a fad; they are a convenient solution for anyone who wants to integrate more natural choices into their home. I have had amazing success integrating oils into our daily lives as a complement to an overall lifestyle of natural living.
Here are a few ways that I use oils in our home:
Boosting our immune systems
We take vitamins, supplements, and try to eat as healthy as possible, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. For more immune support I use the protective blend aromatically in my diffuser and apply it topically to our bodies each day. We are especially mindful of this when there is a lot of sickness going around during the colder months. These are simple things to do, but they make a huge difference in supporting strong immune systems.
Sniffles? Headache? Tummy upset? Throwing up? The yucky feeling that a cold is trying to take a hold of you? At the first sign of any of these symptoms I formerly would have been stressing out and reaching for over the counter options, but now I pull out my oils. With something contagious, I don’t just treat the sickie, I also use oils on the other family members to boost their immune systems to help their body prevent the germs from spreading. By the time one kid is showing symptoms, chances are high that they have already exposed their siblings as well. My cabinet used to be stocked with various bottles of childrens over the counter remedies, but now I have an oil for any complaint. With pre-made roller bottles on hand, the oils are already diluted and very easy to use for quick application in a moment of need. And let’s be honest, there are many moments of need every day!
Owies and other issues
Oils are amazing for those minor emergencies that so often pop up when you have children. With many of the oils being antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal, they are a fantastic first aid for that cut, scrape, bite, or burn. They can even help to soothe a growing pain or prevent that bump from becoming a full-fledged bruise. Oils are incredibly versatile, and I love that one oil can be used in numerous ways- not only for a minor injury, but to provide relief from chronic symptoms and more serious conditions as well.
They make me happy
Did you know that citrus oils are “happy oils” and they can help energize and brighten your mood? We all have those challenging days and simply taking a minute to inhale some wild orange oil can help you have a brighter outlook! There is even a women’s monthly blend that is an amazing topical blend that I’ve used to regulate my hormones and alleviate the symptoms of PMS and the physical discomforts of a monthly cycle. When I first began using it even my husband commented that he noticed a difference in my mood! When my mom told me about her hot flashes and the anxiety associated with not knowing when they would hit, I shared peppermint oil with her she said it was a “miracle oil” and made such a huge difference that she was recommending it to her friends and co-workers! There are also oils and blends to help with stress and anxiety, as well as calming oils to help promote relaxation and sleep. Whatever the complaint, rest assured that there is an oil for that!
Homemade is better!
Finding all natural beauty and personal care products can be challenging, as well as expensive. With a few natural ingredients and my essential oils, I can make the majority of my own products. Many of the oils are amazing for skin and can help with the symptoms of acne, eczema, psoriasis or just dryness. I have made deodorant, salves, body butter, lip balm, bath salts, homemade hand sanitizer, and many other items. Making your own allows you to choose high quality ingredients, and you can customize the strength and scent of the finished product. I am now addicted to making my own products!
Bye-bye toxic cleaners!
With oils in my toolkit, I no longer feel the need to buy toxic and expensive store-bought cleaners! Did you know that most cleaning products are primarily water anyway? Save some money and with just oils and water you can create your own window cleaner, disinfecting spray, floor cleaner, and deodorizing spray!
This is just a snapshot of how I use my oils in our home each day. As an avid oils user, I have found oils to be an awesome tool in enabling me to live more naturally.
